The Newest Dog Star
Krypto paced nervously back and forth outside the door of one of the sleeping dormitories aboard the Dog Star Patrol ship. The reason for his nervousness was that Brainy Barker, the love of his life and leader of the DSP, was inside, delivering their first pup. The other dog stars were there trying to reassure him, but to no avail. A million thoughts of what might happen ran through Krypto's mind before he suddenly shut them out. These were thoughts that he wanted none of right now. Some time later, Mammoth Mutt emerged.
"Krypto, you have a son," she said with a smile.
Krypto rushed passed her to get to Brainy's side. His jaw literally dropped and his eyes went wide when he saw Brainy, who was resting on one of the beds, with a tiny silver-furred pup at her side. She gave a small, pleasant smile.
"Meet your son, Krypto," she said.
Krypto approached, reaching out to nuzzle his newborn son.
"Hello, little one. I'm your daddy," he said proudly.
The male pup reached out a tiny paw and placed it on Krypto's nose, eliciting an "aww" from his parents. Just then, the other dog stars were allowed in to see the newborn. All loved him upon laying eyes upon him.
"I wonder what sort of powers he will possess, and what we should name him," Brainy commented.
Suddenly, without warning, the tiny puppy sneezed, sending out a short burst of fire as he did so. All present were stunned. Krypto then laughed.
"You're like a little dragon, aren't you, son?" he said playfully.
Brainy then had an idea.
"How about we name him Draco? It literally means 'dragon'," she said.
And so, it was decided. Draco, son of Krypto the Superdog and Brainy Barker, would be the newest dog star when he was old enough. Shortly afterward, the others left, leaving Krypto and Brainy alone with their son.
"I hope he looks like you when he's older," Krypto said.
"And I hope he possesses powers similar to yours," Brainy replied, keeping Draco close to her.
Krypto licked her cheek, then licked Draco. Sadness welled up inside him.
"I will have to get going soon. Will you be all right without me?" he asked wistfully.
Brainy gave a comforting smile.
"Remember our telepathic link. We can communicate any time. Go, my love. Do what you need to do," she said.
Krypto knew she was right. He stayed as long as he could, then headed back for home, thinking of his mate and son the whole way.
